ReplyDeleteBefore The Be the Change Student Committee could begin our initiative, and journeys as global citizens. We wanted to know were our funds were going towards, as well as how to spread awareness appropriately and effectively. The alternative income program is the specific area the McMurrich community supports. The alternative income program supports families with, other sources of many necessities, and women’s small business, which decreases gender inequalities. Together as a WE community the AIP is helping people around the world, just like us.

Hi I’m Izy, member of the “Be the change student committee” There are many concerns in our world that the BTC tries to help. The one I’m going to talk about is the lights out campaign. The light out campaign is when me and other members go to each door in our school and check if their lights are on or off, and if they are on we put a piece of recycled paper on their door saying to remember to turn them off next time. And if they are off we record it on our chart. At the end of every other month we show the school how well they did. We are aiming to make environmental change in our community! Thank you!

We will be walking around in our socks to raise awareness about children who have no shoes.
For this campaign our driving quote is “In order to understand a person’s life, you have to walk a mile their shoes.” But what if the person has no shoes?
This is a huge crisis that is happening all over the world 218 million children are child labours.
These children can not afford to buy shoes to walk to school or go to the river to collect water.
This is why on barefoot day our school will walk without shoes in respect for kids who can not afford to buy shoes.

Hi, I am Jenny, a representative of the be the change student committee. Life was difficult for many people to meet basic needs in Sri Lanka and it has been even more challenging after the tsunami that hit in 2006. For this reason, The Be The Change committee was formed to support Sri Lanka through Free The Children. This region suffers from poverty that is even worse then any other countries. As soon as the tsunami struck, conditions there have become worse leaving many families, and others heart broken. Furthermore affecting 70% of Sri Lanka, damaging 200 schools and 100 health care clinics, and making it very hard for people to make a living. Luckily many organizations are helping Sri Lanka to build a better community for the future.

On Friday May,7th 2010, our school took part in an exciting, fun, and wild initiative with a subject that was very serious. Get Loud was in May because it was Hearing awareness month. The subject behind Get Loud is recognizing children that are hard of hearing and or deaf. These children need the basic education that every other person needs but just in a different way. Did you know that 3 in 1000 babies have some hearing problems? Voice is a program that supports and helps children with hearing problems and gives them a chance in life. Voice has been around for 40 years and has helped tons of children. We wanted to take part in changing these children's life by GETTING LOUD! 43 seconds (ish)

ReplyDeleteThe topic I am going to talk about today is Plastic Waste. Think about your carbon footprint in plastic. Plastic water bottles damage our lands and also oceans which destroys water life. It takes 700 years just for the plastic water bottle to begin decomposing. Did you know that 25% of bottled water is just tap water. We can all help instead of using a water bottle use a stainless steel water bottle. By replacing a plastic water bottle we can help reduce plastic waste. BTC collected 129 plastic water bottles in Mcmurrich let's see if we can reduce that amount.

In addition, we raised a lot of money to support the country of Haiti, who was devastated by an earthquake. In our community we are making those changes and committing to our goals. On November 20th, the anniversary for the United Nations Convention on the rights of a child our school community participated in The Vow of Silence. This initiative symbolized child labours who have no one to share their feelings too. We went silent for a day to understand how it felt for these children and to put our selves in their shoes. The vow of silence focused point was not to raise money but to build awareness in our community. We were loud. We were Strong. We were silent. On November 20th we made a big difference.

Child Labor
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Christine and I'm here to talk about child labor. Child labor is a global issue around the world which includes children under the age of 18 working long hours to support their families, being exposed to abusive treatment by others and having limited or no education at all. An estimated 218 million children suffer from child labor across the world. In addition children work in dangerous places and use tools that could possibly kill them such as, fire works with explosives, chemicals and machinery.

Teachers see students helping others, cleaning up without being told, so they get their name on a slip in a jar. ReplyDeleteThis year the Be the Change Student Committee hosted our 2nd annual Poetry Night. It was a great way for the Mcmurrich community to come together and express theirselves through music, drama,and language. All of the 50 students who participated in Poetry Night did an amazing job. All of the funds we raised during Poetry Night went towards the Alternative Income Program in Sri Lanka. Thank you for coming out to support the Mcmurrich community!
