BAREFOOT INITIATIVE will be on June 8th
  • final draft of notice submitted by May 9th
  • notice sent out to school by May 14th
  • Students to wear socks in class for the day on June 8th

Awareness:

  • "walking in someone else's shoes (socks)"
  • empathy
  • perspective
  • materialism / commercialism (Zoe & Adeline)
  • research Bilaal Rajan (Zoe & Adeline)
  • people in developing countries without shoes (Sam, Sonia, Leo & Julia)
  • how much children need to walk / distance
  • girls / water / walking issues
  • gender inequalities

Activity: walk in socks across field while carrying buckets or jugs of water; designing socks of your own or bringing in funky socks to wear for June 8th.

When you look at one developing country and see the poverty, then you look at a wealthy country and see how they have millions of adds for shoes and how they are the "new thing," there is a big difference. One who was kind would think to themselves, "wow imagine if I were the one in the poor country that could barely afford one or no pairs of shoes!" Someone that didn't care wouldn't even think twice about it! The problem with our environment that we live in is that barely anybody cares.

    What do you think? This is my rough draft of the paragragh.

  10. Congratulations Barefoot Initiative group! Your session yesterday morning was informative, engaging and inspiring. Imagine, only having the students for a 20minute session to build awareness and empathy, how much could have been accomplished? In fact, much was accomplished, students returned to class asking teachers more quetions; several students wrote messages while others drew pictures to express their understanding of what Barefoot Initiative was all about. The class discussions would not have happened if it had not been for your groups efforts to initiate the discussions. You should all be very proud of yourselves as the last initiative, like all others run throughout the year, was a great success.
