We the "Be The Change" Student Committee of McMurrich believe in building a community of respect and empathy.As a leadership group we are determined to promote the 8 millennium developmental goals and empower our community to make a difference. Throughout this year,we will learn how to become globally aware on issues of child labour, gender inequalities and polluted water by implementing initiatives toward the Alternative Income Program, Adopt-A-Village campaign.We are children helping children.

Poetry Night would not be complete without the performers. Auditions will be held on (date). We encourage students to write their own poems. Our group would like the poems to be inspirational, and expressive. The BTC will be giving feed back on your performance, performers that are invited back are expected to show up at rehersals. The BTC will be judging the performers on their poems by the oringinality, creativity, expressing theirselves, and if the poem is to the theme. The more performers the better. ReplyDeleteThe BTC group at Mcmurrich has been working hard on initiatives like plastic waste and lights out and our past initiatives like 10x10 the food drive and the vow of silence.Poetry night is the newest one with your help poetry will be a huge sucess like our past initiatives!!

For the past 4 years students of the Mcmurrich community have had the opportunity to take part in Be the Change Student Committee. The committee give’s students the chance to learn about global issues and promote global citizenship. The BTC group is supporting the Alternative Income Program (AIP) in Sri Lanka. Poetry Night is one of our many initiatives which funds go towards AIP. The AIP is an organization that raises money for families in developing countries for kids to get an education and basic needs such as medical care, clean water, and food.

The Be the Change Student Committee (BTC) will be hosting McMurrich’s 2nd Annual Poetry Night “Changing the World, One Rhyme at a Time”. For the past four years students of the McMurrich community have had the opportunity to take part in the BTC Student Committee who organizes initiatives for McMurrich students to take part in. The committee gives students the chance to learn about global issues and promote global citizenship. The McMurrich Community is supporting the Alternative Income Program (AIP) which is part of Free the Children. Free the Children is an organization that raises awareness and funds for families in developing countries to support children to receive an education and have access to basic needs such as, medical care, clean water and food. Please come out to support the Alternative Income Program at our 2nd Annual Poetry Night. “We are Children Helping Children.”
“Changing the World, One Rhyme at a Time” is an opportunity for students in the McMurrich Community to show their talent through dance, drama, music, and poetry. Poetry Night will held on Thursday March 25th, 2010 from 6:00pm to 8pm in the school gymnasium. Tickets will be on sale Monday March 8th, 2010, further details will follow after auditions. Throughout the event there will be ten open mic sessions which will give you, the parent audience, a chance to express your talent alongside the McMurrich student performers. There will be an intermission when guests will be able to browse BTC displays.
Poetry Night would not be complete without performers. Auditions will be held on Tuesday March 2, 2010 and Wednesday March 3rd, 2010 at lunch. We encourage students to write their own poems or choose one from another poet that is inspirational to you. You may audition alone or with another person. The theme of the poems should be inspirational, have a positive message and be expressive. Students should incorporate drama, music, props and/or expression into their poems and auditions. Performers that are invited back are expected to show up at rehearsals the following week. The BTC Student Committee will judging the performers on their poem choice, originality, creativity, expression and it their poem represents the theme. The more performers, the better.

Primary: Wednesday March 3, 2010 at 11:35 bring your lunch to room 204
Junior: Tuesday March 2, 2010 at 11:35 bring your lunch to room 204
Poem: Originals poems are encouraged or a poem written by another poet

ReplyDeleteAre you interested in joining Poetry Night? Well, on March 25th Poetry Night is taking place. It is just 30 days away! We are looking for original, creative, poems that have an inspiring message. You are encouraged to create your own poem or you can use someone else’s poem that inspired you. All of the profits from Poetry Night will be going to the Alternative Income Program in Sri Lanka. You will express your poem threw music, drama, dance, and language. The primary auditions are on Wednesday, March 3rd at 11:35 in room 204. Junior auditions are going to be held on Tuesday, March 2nd at 11:35 in room 204 and you have to bring your lunch to the audition! Hope to see you there! ReplyDeleteThanks for finishing the letter I will give the group a copy to edit and make changes. One suggestion use the word students instead of children. Also you may want to include that they could bring a poem to share.

Dear Mr. Smith,
The Be the Change Student Committee of Mcmurrich is a group of dedicated Grade 6 students committed to helping make a change in the world. It is an opportunity for McMurrich students to promote awareness of global and local issues. The Be the Change Student Committee (BTC) is committed to supporting Free the Children and the Alternative Income Program (AIP) in Sri Lanka. The AIP supports the local community and is allowing children to have an equal opportunity just like us.
The BTC Committee is hosting McMurrich’s 2nd annual Poetry Night, "Changing the World One Rhyme at a Time". We would be honoured if you would attend this event that promotes local and global awareness through poetry, drama and music. This event gives the Mcmurrich Community an opportunity to express themselves through dance, drama, music, and language. ReplyDeleteChild Labour is a big issue around the world. Child labour includes: children under the age of 18 years old working long hours each day, abusive treatment by the manager or employer, and limited access or no access to education at all. There are about 218 million children suffering from child laborer. Most of them work in dangerous places such as: mine fields with chemicals and pesticides, or with explosives and hazardous machinery. These children have been affected by poverty which means their living on less than a dollar a day. They have to fend for their selves like adults. Article 32 in UN convention of Children’s Right: You have the right to protection from work that harms you, and is bad for your health and education. If you work, you have the right to be safe and paid fairly.
•There are 218 million children under 18 that suffer from child labour
•It’s a BIG ISSUE around the world
•They have the right to Safety and Protection

You may have noticed that the BE THE CHANGE student committee usually says that the proceeds from our events go to the alternative income program, but what is the alternative income program.

Combat (HIV/AIDS)
Environmental Sustainability
Global Partnership
These are the eight Millenium Developmental Goals that our government focuses on in Canada.They are very important and critical to resolve.

The Alternative Income Program works on helping to collect income for developing countries on Agriculture, Women’s Co-operatives, Machinery, and Animals. The Alternative Income Program on agriculture supports the people in devolving countries to proper training, droughts, and proper fertilizer. Having fertilizer it will help provide nutrients for the food they eat and grow bumping up the value of the food. The AIP on Women’s Co-ops focuses on helping to uplift the women in villages in developing countries. The AIP helps send girls to school, give them the proper training they need to help their families. All the income goes directly to the families and goes into savings. Putting income into savings, benefits the women because it could go towards health and education. The Free the Children AIP campaign has gotten women inspired to become involved educating young children. Doing this they gain self confidence, get more money to support their families, and feel like they are worth something.

ReplyDeleteThis is the Sri Lanka part from the panphlet that me and Sam are saying tomorrow night. We have shortened to to about 6 lines...that okay?
Samantha: Before the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2006 life was difficult for many people to meet basic needs and it is even more challenging afterwards.
Anna: For this reason the Be the Change Student Committee was formed to support Sri Lanka through Free the Children.
Samantha: As soon as the tsunami occurred conditions in Sri Lanka have become worse , leaving many families , communities, and regions of Sri Lanka heart broken.
Anna: Furthermore affecting 70% of Sri Lanka, damaging 200 school and 100 health care clinics and making it very difficult for many people to make a living.
Together: Additionally forcing thousands of people into poverty.
Together: Luckily many organizations, including FTC, are helping Sri Lanka to build a better community in the future.
Tell me if there needs to be any changes!

Alexx:The alternative income progam also works on supporting women rights in developing countries. The income provides funds to support woman with their own business. Alternative income progam helps to send girls tho school and give them the training they need for their families. All the money donated goes directly to the the families in need. So far AIP has help many families in developing countries. Together: Craig Keilburger belives, " If you can teach a woman, she will teach a whole village.
Kayliegh is doing farming and animals. Also the opening!

Alternative Income Program
ReplyDeleteKayleigh:The Alternative Income Program helps bring an Income to developing countries to help give families and villages animals, women's cooperatives, machinery and farming.
Alternative Income is where you can donate money to get an animal for a family or village who needs an animal. For example a cow for milking. Usually the families which are the farmers do not have the land for farming. Due to lack of skills in farming, the land they do have is not the best it could be. As well the farmers do not have the skills to get the most value for their produce. With the Alternative Income Program the farmers get their land fertilized, farming equipment, and most importantly training. Kayleigh
